February: Valentine's 5k

On Valentines we found out about a couples run in Jacksonville. It was a combined 10k where each partner did a 5k and tag teamed it.

I wasn't up to running on this day or any day in February. By April I could comfortably run 3-4 miles but not in February. Ethan was his dad's partner along with the rest of the kids.

Brian was fast and this was a warm-up for the 1/2 marathon he did the next week in Rogue River. He is training for a marathon in June in Idaho called the Teton Dam Race. I think he just wants to run that race because he gets a t-shirt that says, "I ran the Dam race!"

February: Pet Pictures

The girls are always asking for pictures of them with their favorite pets. I took many pics of them for a week.

Sophie and Mish are definitely buddies. Mish follows Sophie around the house when she is home.

Lizzy's TV habits always include a few hamsters watching with her.

She is always begging for them to go to church with her and gives me this sad look when I tell her to return them to their cages.

February: P90x

I entered a fitness contest with some friends. We were attempting to get trim and buff. We used a DVD program called P90x. We made a 3 month committment to the program and just finished. The net results: 15 pounds lost down 2 pant sizes and I learned Yoga and Kenpo!!!

The kids initially showed great interest in doing it with us and our first night of Yoga was a family event! Here we are all in upward dog!

I couldn't believe how well I could stretch and touch my toes after doing yoga for 3 months. It was the hardest of the DVDs and the longest also. By the end I could almost do crane!

Chataranga baby!

February: Artemisia

We have been looking at getting a dog for 4 years. We always came up with logical reasons not to get one. But when you have hamsters, horses, chickens and cows, why not a dog? We had to be picky though. Andrew has significant allergies so we were looking for a hypoallergenic non-shedding creature. My other preference was something that stayed really small. When running the list of small dogs that met that criteria we kept coming back to the Maltese. Maltese stay between 4-6 pounds and are super cute, non-shedding, and loyal companions.

Whenever we picked up the nickel or looked in the classifieds, rarely were maltese dogs available and if they were they were too far or inconvenient. We almost got a chi-weeny dog (chihuahua/miniature doxin combo) on Christmas Eve because the puppies were available and in town but I just was unsure on the shedding and not as soft as a maltese.

Well, I was at the Grange Co-Op getting some hamster supplies and saw an add posted on the board. I called the number and was surprised to find the breader lived no more than 2 minutes from my house and she just had posted the add, meaning we had any pick of the 4 pups in litter. There was one boy who was chunky and pleasant, one that was not completely white, a runt in the bunch that was sooooo small Brian was afraid that one step of Ethans on her paw/leg/body would damage/crush her. Then we saw our little one.

She was very shy and pleasant. She was so calm and that was a big trait that I wanted. We took her home and then the name game began. Brian declared he would name her and basically that was the last "care" he has provided for the dog (I knew this was on me if I wanted a dog). He decided to give her the name Artemisia (Art-eh-mish-a) after a great aunt of his because he loved the name and knew I would never go for it with a child. We call her Mish for short.

We crate trained her and the kids helped with that. They knew she shouldn't be left alone at the beggining so they all slept with her each night for the first week.

Sophie and I give her her baths which are really no work but seem to be put last on my priority list until she is just stinky. This is her first bath picture.

We love our Artemisia!

She looks not much different than this picture. She weighs about 3 pounds and is just perfect....minus potty training. She is still a puppy so we are still working with her on the poop issue. But regardless, her poops are the size of tootsie rolls and firm so there is no mess left in my house.

She has been a welcome addition to our home and I haven't regretted our decision yet. My friend Sharon bought a Beagle about the same time and their dog Reggie lasted all of 7 days. We are going on 4 months now and quite happy.

February: Cub Scout Blue/Gold Banquet

Andrew attended his first ever Cub Scout Blue/Gold banquet. Each scout was to create a dessert replicating a national landmark. Brian and Andrew attempted to make the U.S. Capitol.

After 6 tubs of icing, 3 cakes, and some serious labor, they had what kind of looked like the capitol.

I helped it along by printing off a picture of the building and pasting it to the side. Andrew was quite happy.

The cubmaster's were the judges for the event. We had a lovely costco lasagna dinner with homemade bread and salad.

I thought I would include some of the amazing pieces of work we were able to see. This was the Washington Monument made out of fondant and the grand canyon next to it.

We also had a strawberry shortcake made out of our nation, a fruit tart flag, and many Crater Lakes (since this is the most significant landmark here in Oregon).

The crater lake with the cup in it had a live fish inside. That's some serious craziness!

Andrew won the "Most Patriotic" award and his cake was quickly eaten due to the high volume of sugar inside. It was a succesful event.
